The three real downsides

Any roofer who claims foam has no drawbacks is selling, not explaining.

2. Install quality varies more than with other systems. Foam is mixed and sprayed on site. Deck prep, ambient temperature, mix ratio, pass thickness, and coating mil thickness are all decided by the crew on your roof that day. A shingle is a shingle no matter who nails it; foam is only as good as the installer.
3. The surface can be damaged. Dropped tools, dragged ladders, and heavy foot traffic can gouge it. It is easy to repair when caught early and expensive to ignore. If you have HVAC techs on the roof regularly, walk pads are worth it.

When foam is not the answer

If your roof is steep, foam is the wrong system — tile or shingle is right, and we install both. If your flat roof deck is structurally failing or saturated, foam over wet substrate traps moisture, so the wet material comes off first.
