What Homeowners Should Look For When Hiring a Roofing Company in Phoenix

Choosing the right contractor for your home is a major decision, especially given the unique challenges of the Arizona climate. Our owner, Tim, has been on Phoenix rooftops for over 35 years and knows exactly what homeowners should watch out for. We sat down with him to get his expert take on the must-ask questions and red flags to avoid when hiring a roofing company.

What is the first thing Phoenix homeowners often overlook when starting their search?

Experience is the number one thing to look for, specifically ensuring you get a post-service warranty that the company will actually be around to back up. We’ve been in business for 37 years, so we have all kinds of warranties out there that we actively stand behind. You should also check if the company uses actual employees or if they subcontract the work out, as that is a detail many people miss.

When comparing quotes, what are some red flags that might indicate a problem later on?

You want to make sure you’re getting the same foam thickness and amount of coating across all quotes so you aren't getting cheated. Differences in the thickness of the foam or the volume of coating applied can make a huge difference in the price, but it also affects the longevity of your roof.

Beyond licensing, what credentials distinguish a reputable Phoenix roofing company?

We are proud members of the BBB and part of the 'Rosie on the House' program, where every company is thoroughly vetted. Beyond those certifications, look at the experience of the actual crew; our lead foam sprayers have between 10 and 30 years of experience. You want to know that the people on your roof have been around the block and truly know what they are doing.

How can a homeowner verify if a company has genuine, long-standing local experience?

You can look up the history of a company through the Corporation Commission or ROC licenses to see if they've been around as long as they claim. The internet has been around for a long time now, so you can do your homework by looking for old pictures or historical records to verify their local roots.

What should homeowners understand about material and workmanship warranties before signing?

We offer five and 10-year warranties, but the specs matter. Some companies offer a 10-year warranty with a two-coat system, but we won't do that because you run the risk of having to redo the roof sooner. We use a three-coat system for our 10-year warranties because it handles the coating breakdown better over time and remains easily recoatable to extend the life of the roof.

What are common misconceptions about the roofing process, and how can scams be avoided?

On flat foam roofs, it’s easy to be scammed because most people don't know how to probe the foam to check the thickness themselves. We’ve seen cases where people didn't get the full inch they were promised, or worse, stories where a contractor only did a 10x10 area and claimed they did the whole thing. If you ever have a question with us, we’re happy to jump up there and show you exactly how to check the work.

How should a homeowner approach checking references or online reviews?

Online reviews tell a lot and are a great place to start, but you should also ask the company directly for references. We are always happy to give those out so you can talk to verified customers and ask them exactly how the process went when they used us.

How does a professional company handle Phoenix weather, like monsoon season?

During monsoon season, we have a strict policy that we absolutely do not leave a roof open or exposed if there is a chance of rain. While you can get away with more in the sunny spring or fall, our goal is to ensure every roof we tear off is completely dried in and protected before the crew leaves for the day.

What kind of post-installation support should a homeowner expect?

Once the job is done, you should receive a formal warranty with clear information on what to do if you have a claim or need something checked out. If there is ever an issue, you can just give us a call and we’ll run out there to take a look. You don’t survive for 37 years in this business if you don’t stand behind your work.

What is your final advice for a homeowner who has a 'gut feeling' about a company?

Do your homework—check references, look at online photos, and even ask to see a recently completed project in person. A new roof is a big expense, and you need to know for sure that you're getting a quality system so you don't end up with thousands of dollars in damage from a simple mistake. Make sure everything is written clearly in the contract and that the company is one that actually stands behind their guarantees.
